Doing a Season in Meribel
Meribel was one of the first European ski resorts to become popular with British holiday makers.
In fact, it was founded by Peter Lindsay, a British Colonel in 1938. The resort lies between Courchevel and Val Thorens in what’s thought to be the world’s largest connected ski area. Meribel is the winter resort of choice for so many British seasonaires and you’ll soon learn why!
As you enter a bar for an apres demi in Meribel, you’ll notice that your barmaid and most likely the bar owner are British. Barometer in the centre of the resort is a large bar that gets packed out when seasonaires and punters collide. Evolution Cafe just round the corner hosts live music most nights, as does La Taverne. Anyone who’s ever been near Meribel has heard of Le Rond Point or ‘the Ronnie’ – a huge bar with an even bigger sunny terrace on the piste as you ski back down to the Chaudanne. It hosts the wildest of apres parties until 7.30pm each and every night. The original Dicks Tea Bar is also in Meribel – no, that doesn’t make it any more affordable than the others but it’s still a great night out.
Many returning seasonaires choose to live in Les Allues, just 5 minutes down the valley from Meribel. It has a quieter charm than the resort centre, especially during peak holiday weeks and is often a more affordable option. The bubble lift stops in Les Allues, taking you to the central Chaudanne lift station and the village is on a regular bus route too.
