Doing a Season in Tignes
Most famous for hosting the Winter X Games each year, the purpose built ski resort of Tignes is concentrated around Tignes-Le-Lac at 2100 metres altitude.
Connected to it’s neighbour Val d’Isere to create the Espace Killy ski area, Tignes is a fantastic place to spend a ski season.
The best way to describe Tignes is as the absolute polar opposite to a resort like Courchevel. There are no rich Russians, no designer shops, no ski chalets clad in gold. Tignes isn’t known as the most attractive or charming ski resort in the French Alps, but it does attract the most extreme skiers and snowboarders for the entire winter season. It’s snow-sure you see… which is probably why it describes itself as ‘the sportiest ski resort’.
The Underground Bar is usually the centre of the seasonaire crowd each winter. They open from 3pm for Apres, there are drinks discounts for seasonaires and special prices on food too. There are three clubs in Tignes, all opening until 5am. Le Melting is usually packed out from midnight and Jacks Club have great live local DJs.
